Beyond Beautiful Window Dressing

Beyond Beautiful Window Dressing

Beyond Beautiful Window Dressing

This custom window treatment design started with a rough sketch and a vision that my Client’s husband had for their two story great room windows. I immediately understood what he wanted to accomplish and prepared this drawing to take his vision to another level by adding a combination of beautiful fabrics, trims, and hardware that would compliment the Tuscany look of their home and their beautifully painted walls.

I wanted to find colors that would stand the test of time for this dramatic design and selected a tone-on-tone textured fabric in a copper color for the outside cornices and the center lambrequin. A solid brown textured fabric will be used for the laminated crown moldings  emphasizing the design. The cornices will be embellished with scrolled crown hardware in a Tuscan gold finish to add that crowning touch that makes this design stand out and look so spectacular. The center lambrequin will project 3 1/2″ more than the outside cornices to give dimension to the design.

A stunning paisley fabric in rich colors of golds, browns, and copper will be used for the extra-long custom drapes tied back with large tassel tiebacks and decorative holdbacks in the same finish as the crowns. The draperies anchor and frame the over-all look and complete the design.

Since strong rays of sunlight come through the center arched window are fading the client’s leather furniture, we will be installing a Hunter Douglas Applause motorized honeycomb shade beneath to resolve the issue. If you haven’t seen the new Powerrise shades from Hunter Douglas yet, please visit their web-site at www.HunterDouglas.com.

In addition to the shade, we are putting more focus on the center lambrequin by adding a pair of rod pocket sheer panels beneath the lambrequin that will be drawn back with tiebacks. They will help to soften the sunlight when the honeycomb shade is hidden beneath the design. For more information, please feel free to give us a call at 518-355-0063.

The result…..a beyond beautiful window dressing!

Cornice with Nailhead Trim

A cornice with nailhead trim gives a finished look to this bedroom window. We used a textured matelasse fabric with a self welt and  chrome nailheads spaced 1″ apart on the  top and bottom of the cornice to complete the look. The crisp white textured fabric against the gray walls provides a stunning contrast. Could this design be the answer for a window in your home?

If you are looking for an easy to care for window treatment for your home consider designing your windows with lambrequins. Lambrequins are upholstered cornices with longer sides providing a polished classic look. There are many styles and shapes to choose from for traditional or contemporary designing. Since lambrequins are upholstered like furniture, they can easily be cleaned by vacuuming dust or by hiring an upholstery cleaning service for a deeper more thorough cleaning. This is of particular interest to homeowners who suffer from allergies as our client does. She loved the idea of a simple, yet elegant window treatment that would be  easy to care for. The lambrequin pictured here was the perfect solution.  If you would like more information about Lambrequins, please contact us at 518/355-0063. We would love to help you design a lambrequin for your home in a fabulous fabric from our extensive library. Happy Decorating!

The scoop on upholstered cornices for your windows

How upholstered cornices can be an economical choice to dress your windows.

  1. Keep the design simple, choose a straight box design or a shaped design for the bottom
  2. Use self welting or decorative cord on the hem to give your design a polished look
  3. Using an allover printed pattern will give you more decorating color options
  4. Or, use an interesting textured solid fabric with contrast welting to emphasize the shape
  5. Cornices use very little fabric compared to other treatments helping to keep your cost down
  6. They are easy to install and easily cleaned with just a quick vacuum

Adding more touches adds to the cost but here are some things you can do. Upgrade your upholstered cornice with embellishments such as:

  1. Add banding; straight or shirred, single or multiple layers
  2. Use multiple layers in your design to create a unique look
  3. Add crown moulding laminated in fabric
  4. Add a shape to the top and bottom such as an arch
  5. Use decorative nail heads in your design
  6. Add bead or tassel trim to the top or bottom of the cornice
  7. Shirr or pleat the fabric on the cornice face
  8. Add shapes as on lays to the face of the cornice for a 3-dimensional look

Cornices provide many design opportunities. To many to mention here. From simple to elaborate, we can help you create a design uniquely yours.Simple cornice design with detail
